🎯 Objectives
Identify all five Heritage Ring nodes and locate them on the trail map
Describe the historical significance of each node in your own words

🎒 Materials Needed
Heritage Ring trail map (available at the Community Center kiosk)
Field journal or notebook and pencil
Comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes
Water bottle (at least 16 oz per person)
Camera or sketchbook (optional)
Heritage Ring stamp card, if available at kiosk
🪜 Step-by-Step Activity
Orient at the Maxdale Park trailhead kiosk. Review the Heritage Ring overview panel. Locate your starting position on the trail map. Note the five nodes and the approximate route.
Distribute maps and journals. Each participant should write the date, their name, and "Heritage Ring Walk" at the top of their journal page.
Walk to the Cemetery node. Read each interpretive marker carefully. In your journal, record: one name or date that stands out, and one question the marker raises for you.
Walk to the Bridge node. Pause on the approach and observe the bridge structure from a safe distance. Sketch the bridge silhouette or photograph it. Note the construction materials.
Cross to the Lampasas River Corridor. Stop and listen for one full minute before writing anything. Then record three things you observe using each sense — sight, sound, and smell.
Continue to the Community Center node. Review the interpretive panels on the exterior. Look for the timeline panel and identify the oldest and most recent events listed.
Complete your Heritage Ring stamp card at each node station, if stamps are available.
Gather as a group at the Community Center or return to the trailhead. Each participant shares one observation or discovery from the walk — something that surprised them, moved them, or made them curious.

🪜 Step-by-Step Activity
Gather at the Lampasas River Corridor access point. Before approaching the water, review water safety rules (no wading without a leader present, no crossing the channel) and Leave No Trace guidelines for riparian areas.
Sketch a cross-section of the riverbank in your journal — label the water surface, the bank slope, and the upland edge. This is your baseline ecological diagram.
Identify and record 3 riparian plant species using the native plant ID guide. For each plant, write: common name, one identifying feature, and where you found it (water's edge, bank, upland).
Search for and document wildlife signs. Look for tracks in mud, bird nests, insect activity on leaves, scat, or chewed vegetation. Sketch or photograph what you find. Do not disturb nests or burrows.
Complete a water quality observation using the checklist: record water color and clarity, odor (if any), flow rate (fast/moderate/slow), and visible algae or foam.
If equipment and authorization are available, conduct a macroinvertebrate sample in a shallow, calm area. Use the dip net to collect organisms into the tray with a small amount of water.
Classify collected organisms using the provided chart. Sort them into tolerance groups: sensitive species (stoneflies, mayflies) indicate good water quality; tolerant species (tubifex worms) may indicate stress.
Discuss food web connections as a group: What eats the macroinvertebrates? What do the riparian plants provide beyond habitat?
Release all organisms. Return rocks and logs to their original positions. Restore the sample area to its prior condition before moving on.
Record a summary statement in your journal: "One thing I noticed about this river corridor that I did not expect was…"

🪜 Step-by-Step Activity
Approach the Maxdale Bridge and stop at the designated safe observation area. Do not climb on, step onto, or touch the bridge structure without explicit authorization from an MNCA coordinator. Take a full 60-second observation before drawing anything.
Sketch the overall silhouette of the bridge as viewed from the riverbank. Use light pencil strokes — this is your working draft, not a finished drawing. Capture the shape of the span, the height above the river, and the bank geometry.
Label the visible structural components using your engineering vocabulary reference card. Aim to label at minimum: deck (the road surface), span (the horizontal distance crossed), abutment (the structure where bridge meets land), railing, and any visible piers or supports.
Draw force arrows on your sketch to show where compression forces act (pushing inward or downward — typically in the deck and abutments) and where tension forces act (pulling outward — typically in tie rods or cables, if present). Use a color code or label the arrows clearly.
Estimate the bridge's span length by pacing across the equivalent distance along the riverbank, or using your tape measure. Record your estimate in feet or meters next to the sketch.
Note the materials you can identify from observation: stone, concrete, steel rebar, timber, iron railing. Record each material and note where it is used on the structure.
Research or discuss with your group: When was the Maxdale Bridge built? What was its original purpose — foot traffic, wagon crossings, vehicle use? How has its use changed?
On a new page, design your own improved bridge for the same Lampasas River crossing. Sketch it using the same components and label what materials you would use and why. Consider: flood resilience, modern traffic loads, historic character.
Write a 2-sentence engineering rationale below your design sketch: What is the most important structural improvement you made, and what engineering principle guided that choice?

Step-by-Step Activity
Check in with the MNCA site coordinator. Receive your task assignment, site map, and safety briefing. Ask about any specific hazards in your assigned area (uneven terrain, fire ant mounds, poison ivy). Sign in on the volunteer roster.
Photograph the "before" condition of your assigned site area from at least two angles. These images will anchor your stewardship log and document the impact of your work.
Review your task instruction sheet or invasive species ID card before beginning work. Confirm you can correctly identify the target species or litter types before removing anything.
Complete your assigned stewardship task — select one of the following, or rotate through multiple tasks as directed by the MNCA coordinator:

Photograph the "after" condition of your site area from the same angles used for the "before" photos. Note any areas that need follow-up work on your log.
Complete the MNCA stewardship log sheet in full: date, task type, site area, team member names, volunteer hours, and a brief summary of conditions observed.
Debrief as a group. Each participant answers: What did you accomplish? What still needs attention? What will you tell someone else about this place?
Submit your completed log sheet and tally data to the MNCA coordinator. This record contributes directly to the IA-SHS program stewardship database and may inform future maintenance planning at Maxdale Park.
